Pokemon Go has its own currency called PokeCoin, which helps in expanding Pokemon storage and Item Bag capacity, changing Team, and buying several items. To get these benefits, check out this guide on how to get PokeCoins in Pokemon Go.

With a steady supply of PokeCoins, you can make things really easy in Pokemon Go. From Egg Incubators and Lure Modules to Poke Balls and Remote Raid Passes, you can buy every valuable item in the game with them.

Having said that, getting PokeCoins in Pokemon Go isn’t a walk in the park. There are limited ways to get them which compels free-to-play players to put in consistent efforts. Here’s how to get PokeCoins in Pokemon Go.

How to get free PokeCoins in Pokemon Go

The only way to earn free PokeCoins in Pokemon Go is by putting your Pokemon in Gyms. To do so, you either have to find a Gym that your Team (Instinct, Valor, or Mystic) is already defending or defeat and capture a Gym yourself.

For every 10 minutes that your Pokemon defends a Gym, you get one PokeCoin. With this method, you can get a maximum of 50 PokeCoins. This implies that once your Pokemon has defended a Gym for 8 hours and 20 minutes, you’ll no longer receive PokeCoins and the overall reward is capped at 50.

Similarly, you cannot get more than 50 PokeCoins through Gyms in a single day. This means that if you put three Pokemon in separate Gyms and they’re defeated on the same day, you won’t get more than 50 PokeCoins.

Here are some useful tips for trainers looking to defend Gyms to get PokeCoins:

  • Put tanky defenders in Gyms, such as Snorlax, Blissey, Dragonite, Chansey, Slaking, or Metagross.
  • Feed your Pokemon berries so it’s harder for opponents to take them out.
  • Once your Pokemon has defended a Gym for more than eight hours and 20 minutes, stop feeding them berries. You’ll need to wait until it’s defeated to claim your PokeCoins.
