How to find the Dark Amethyst in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Dark Amethyst can be found in the Whispering Depths, specifically in the Phase Spider Matriarch’s nest during Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3.

The well in the Blighted Village
The Blighted Village well is close to the Waypoint.

To get to the Whispering Depths, you first need to make your way to The Blighted Village. Once you’re there, you need to step inside the well or the broken down cellar. Here are the steps:

  1. Pass the Perception check at the well in the Blighted Village
  2. Use the rope to descend into the cave.
  3. Get to the back of the cave (you can either sneak through or fight the enemies).

Once you get to the back of the Whispering Depths, you should see the Phase Spider Matriarch’s nest. The Dark Amethyst will be lying on the floor beside it. More specifically, it can be found at coordinates X: -550 Y: -350.

How to use the Dark Amethyst in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 players can use the Dark Amethyst to complete the Search the Cellar quest and open the Necromancy of Thay.

To get to the Necromancy of Thay, you need to pass the test the Ornate Mirror gives you. These are the answers you need to give to pass into the Cellar:

  • “Szass Tam is a foul, wretched creature.”
  • “To clean a wound?”
  • “I’d look for whatever spell will rid me of this worm in my head.”

The Necromancy of Thay is hidden behind a gate on your left. Make sure you disarm the traps here, and then you can enter the small room where the book is located. Once you have it in hand, use the Dark Amethyst to unlock it.

Should you read the Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3?

The simple answer is yes, you should read the Necromancy of Thay in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Sorcerous Sundries Vault in Baldur's Gate 3
You can find the Tharchiate Codex in the Sorcerous Sundries Vault.

It’s important to give the book to either Gale, Astarion, or a character with high Wisdom. When you first open the book, you will need to pass exceedingly more difficult Wisdom checks.

Once you have done so, the reader will get Forbidden Knowledge, which gives you +1 Wisdom Saving Throws and Ability checks permanently.

In Act 3, you can find The Tharchiate Codex in the Sorcerous Sundries Vault. You can find it in Elminster’s Vault, and once you get it, you can pass a final DC 20 check with the Necromancy of Thay. Then you will get the Danse Macabre level 5 Necromancy Spell permanently.

Finally, you will also get The Tharchiate Codex: Blessing. This is a passive feature that allows you to automatically gain 20 temporary Hit Points after each long rest.

Overall, the only negatives that come from using the Necromancy of Thay is disapproval from some party members. So it’s definitely worth using it, especially considering the kind of buffs you can get.
