MultiVersus gameplay details
The devs at Player First Games (PFG) confirmed MultiVersus will feature rollback netcode to “provide the best online experience possible.” This was celebrated by the fighting game community, as it has become standard for the genre.
PFG also revealed some big changes from the beta’s gameplay with two additions: Dash attacks and Parry Time. “Dash attack is an intuitive combat entry that can quickly close the distance between you and your opponent,” reads its official description. Players can use this attack to start or end a combo, as well as to escape from a sticky situation.
The biggest addition is the Parry, which allows players to counterattack. However, as is common in fighting games, missing the Parry window can leave you in a worse position than before, so players will need to master its timing. The devs are adding these elements to keep the dynamic gameplay while adding more tools for players to attack and defend in battle.
All MultiVersus stages
Since MultiVersus mixes many popular franchises, stages are also an important element in the experience, and here are all the confirmed arenas so far from the beta:
- Batcave (DC)
- Cromulans (Rick and Morty)
- Dexter’s Laboratory
- Scooby-Doo’s Haunted Mansion (Scooby-Doo)
- Sky Arena (Steven Universe)
- The City of Townsville (Powerpuff Girls)
- The Court (Space Jam)
- Throne Room (Game of Thrones)
- Training Room (MultiVersus)
- Tree Fort (Adventure Time)
- Trophy E.D.G.E. (MultiVersus)
MultiVersus Rifts Mode: PvE explained
Game Director and Player First Games co-founder Tony Huynh confirmed the Rifts PvE mode is coming to MultiVersus at launch. According to Huynh, “This new mode will introduce additional ways of playing with unique rewards.”
On May 16, PFG revealed an overview of the PvE mode that “will allow players to travel the multiverse and fight their way through a series of encounters flavored by wacky combat mutators and unique experiences.”
Each Rift will have a series of fights players need to complete alongside challenges and mini-games of different natures called Nodes. All Rifts will follow a specific theme that will prompt unique interactions between characters, building on the MultiVersus “story.”
Rifts will get harder the more you progress through them, and they’ll have seasonal content that will rotate regularly. Players will be able to train their skills outside of PvP in battles with modifiers called mutators. Rifts will also include Boss Battles to end each Rift with a bang.
MultiVersus players will earn Stars by completing Nodes on Rifts and clearing side objectives. Lastly, Gems will allow you to power up different aspects of your fighters. Gems can be for Offense, Defense, or Utility, and if you unlock the same one more than once, you’ll be able to level it up to get better modifiers.
