After a decade-long fan request, the Assassin’s Creed series is finally heading to Japan with Shadows. So, here’s everything we know about the upcoming entry in the storied franchise.

Following its ‘back-to-roots‘ entry in Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Ubisoft’s historical espionage series will be returning to its newfound RPG route with Shadows, previously known as Codename Red.

Here’s all we know about the long-anticipated Assassin’s Creed title in Japan, Shadows, has in store.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows release date

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on November 15, 2024, according to the official trailer. The game is also available for preorder as of May 15, 2024.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows platforms

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a current-gen exclusive title, meaning it’ll only be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Luna. The game is not coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Speaking about the new entry and other upcoming titles, Marc-Alexis Côté, Vice President and Executive Producer of the Assassin’s Creed brand said in a blog post, “…from a technological point of view, these are games that will benefit from a tremendous increase in fidelity with all the improvements that we’re working on with this new iteration of the Anvil pipeline.”

Assassin’s Creed Shadows characters, story & setting

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will take place in Feudal Japan. The game starts in 1579 and follows two protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe. Yasuke is a real historical African samurai, while Naoe is a female shinobi.

Yasuke is a foreigner exploring Japan for the first time, while Naoe is from the province of Igna, known as the birthplace of the Shinobi. The player will experience both of these contrasting perspectives, as Yaskue participates in the destruction of Igna and the shinobi, creating a tense narrative.

Yasuke features a more gung-ho style, fighting multiple enemies at once with a more noisy approach, while Naoe presents a stealth-like approach, more true to the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows gameplay details

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is an open-world RPG like Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla. Ubisoft have confirmed that saying Shadows “will take all the learnings from Odyssey and Valhalla to epitomize the best of what we can do at Ubisoft in terms of RPGs.”

As we know, there are two protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe, each with different fighting styles, the samurai and the shinobi. You can pick and choose when you wish to play as either of these characters, as the official web page states that players can “approach quests with whichever character you prefer, as each possesses their own respective progression, stats, skills, and gear.”

Naoe is more stealth-orientated, blending in the dark and using tools like smoke bombs, kunai, and much more. Yaskue is more combat-focused, with the ability to attack, block, and parry, using weapons such as katanas, kanabos, bows, and more.

The animation and parkour system are also said to have received an overhaul, with the game engine receiving a massive update, but little is known about how far it takes the parkour, whether it is Unity-level or a general improvement over Mirage.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows trailers

On May 14, we received two new trailers for Assassins Creed Shadows, the world premiere and character trailer for Yasuke and Naoe.

The game was first announced at the Assassin’s Creed showcase back during Ubisoft Forward 2022.
